WHY Organic

Why Certified Organic?

We’ve decided that organic certification is very important to insure that our customers know exactly what they are getting.  Other terms we see at the farmer’s markets and around town such as “natural,” “pesticide-free” and “no-spray” can be vague and do not mean that crops were grown without harmful synthetic chemicals.  Even “grown organically” or “beyond organic” doesn’t mean that the produce is certified organic.  So the only way to be truly organic is to have organic certification.

Certified organic produce is food that is produced without using harmful or toxic pesticides, sewage sludge, petroleum-based synthetic fertilizers, radiation, or genetically modified organisms (GMOs).  These requirements are verified through organic certification.  As an organic producer, Branch Mill Organic Farm undergoes an annual inspection to ensure we are meeting the USDA’s National Organic Program (NOP) requirements.

The presence of the USDA and/or CCOF seal on a product ensures that the food you are purchasing has been drown and produced to the National Organic Program (NOP) standards.  The use of the term “organic” is federally regulated by the USDA; only products that are produced to the USDA requirements may legally use this term.

Right Brain

Each morning as I hand water my herbs, flowers and vegetables, I realize the beauty and benefits of organic gardening.  Yesterday, I checked for snails in my chocolate mint and see a frog tucked in by the roots.  I’m reminded that frogs are the litmus test of our environment-some of the first species to disappear with pesticides and climate change.  I smile to hear and see little fogs throughout my farm and garden.  I find a preying mantis in amongst the sorrel-babies from last year’s big ones in the same plant, I wonder.  Some of the most beneficial insects there are.  Gorgeous creatures.  As I examine the borage and calendula flowers, I’m in awe of how many honeybees are feeding on the nectar.  My sages are filled with swallowtail butterflies hours on end.  Lipstick sage is alive with rub-throated hummingbirds darting from here and yon, loving each native plant they land on.  Orioles galore, bluebirds flitting about, gold finches dipping into the fountain for a quick drink, and the blue jays always making a ruckus. The red tailed hawk family soars overhead each afternoon, calling out to me.  Why grow organic?  How could we not?  An oasis of Mother Natures’ creatures that must be preserved.  An artist’s dream outside my window.  Let us continue to plant and grow more native plants, herbs and flowers to attract the lovely bees, butterflies and birds.  I simply love each day and moment to treasure nature’s miracles.

Protect our family’s health
There are numerous studies from around the world connecting conventional pesticide use, genetic-engineering, and antibiotics with higher rates of disease an infections so the solution is to eat organically.

Stop the Spread of GMO’s

Genetically modified organisms (GMO’s) are not allowed in organic production.  A large and growing body of research shows that GMO’s can have a number of negative health effects.  Studies also indicate that they can disrupt the ecosystem, damage wild pland and animal populations, and harm biodiversity.

Preserve the Environment

Organic farming protects and promotes wildlife and biodiversity, supporting larger populations of beneficial organism such as bees, other pollinators and songbirds!  Organic farmers’ focus on soil fertility and water conservation helps build a sustainable food supply for future generations.  The absence of synthetic fertilizers and toxic pesticides from organic agriculture protects our rivers from harmful chemical runoffs that decrease fish populations and create ocean dead zones.
